RAF LAKENHEATH, England — Liberty Intermediate School fifth-grade students recently took a walking field trip to Lakenheath Elementary School to partner with kindergarten students in a holiday-themed mentoring and learning experience.

Liberty Intermediate School fifth-grade teachers collaborated with Lakenheath Elementary School kindergarten teachers to design a cross-grade activity focused on student partnership, mentorship and engagement. The visit blended science, math and literacy lessons while fostering connections between older and younger students.

During the visit, fifth-grade students paired with kindergarten students for a science mixtures lesson, creating trail mix and preparing hot cocoa while practicing how to separate mixtures. Students also worked together on holiday-themed math activities and supported kindergarten students with a holiday mug addition project.

The partnership continued with shared reading and a short writing activity, where kindergarten students used sentence stems to write opinion statements with guidance from their fifth-grade partners.

Fifth-grade students said the experience was both meaningful and rewarding. “My favorite part was seeing all of the kinders doing their work and helping them,” said Thea Mattus. Eleanor Ullman noted the connection to classroom learning, saying, “Since we are doing mixtures in class, we did a trail mix with them and then had them separate it.” Izzy Castellanos added, “I loved helping them separate the mixtures.”

The partnership between Liberty Intermediate School and Lakenheath Elementary School is expected to continue, providing future opportunities for students to mentor younger peers while building leadership skills and strengthening school community connections.
